Scholarships

All auditions will be in-person on Saturday, March 9, 2024 at Bob Jones University, Gustafson Fine Arts Center.
Scholarships for 2023-2024 are graciously being provided by the Virginia Bellew Fund, Bob Jones University Division of Music, and Steinway Gallery of the Carolinas.

GMTA Laurence Hamilton Morton+ Piano Scholarships

  • $300 provided by the Bob Jones University Division of Music and the Virginia Bellew Fund*
  • $200 provided by the Bob Jones University Division of Music and the Virginia Bellew Fund*
  • $100 provided by the Virginia Bellew Fund* and GMTA general scholarship funds
  • $100 provided by GMTA general scholarship funds
  • $100 provided by GMTA general scholarship funds

Eligibility | Non-GMTA Member

  1. To be eligible, an applicant in school grades 9-12 must be a student of a current GMTA piano teacher.
  2. Non-GMTA member teachers must pay an annual fee of $50 to have students participate in auditions.

  1. There is a $20 non-refundable entry fee per student. February 20, 2024, 11:59 pm, at greenvillemta.org.
  2. The fillable PDF judge comment form and liability waiver should be emailed toDeanna Moore.
  3. Payment of fees, applications, and PDF judge comment forms date-stamped | postmarked after February 20, 2024, 11:59 pm will not be accepted.

Repertoire & Performance Rules

  1. The student must perform two (2) solo pieces from memory.
  2. The student must perform one (1) J. S. Bach piece from: the Sinfonias, English Suites, French Suites,
    Toccatas, Partitas, Well-Tempered Clavier (one Prelude or one Fugue), or more difficult.
  3. The student must also perform one (1) composition from Classical, Romantic, or Contemporary literature.
  4. A total audition time of 12 minutes will be strictly enforced.
  5. Original scores with numbered measures must be provided for the judge.
  6. Photocopies of copyrighted pieces and/or editions are prohibited. 
  7. Any digitally purchased copies must have the purchaser’s name printed on the music or
    should be accompanied by a receipt.
  8. Concerto repertoire, arrangements, and transcriptions are unacceptable.
  9. Previous winners may not repeat their repertoire from past LHM Piano Auditions.
     

Scholarship Disbursements

  1. Scholarships will (or will not) be awarded at the discretion of the judge. The decision of the judge shall be final.
  2. Scholarship monies will be paid directly to the teacher or institution of the student’s choice, and will be mailed within one month following the auditions.

*The amount appropriated from the Bellew Fund is flexible, and is approved by the Executive Board on an annual basis.

Steinway Gallery of the Carolinas Senior Piano Scholarship

$250 Scholarship provided by Steinway Gallery of the Carolinas, Greenville 

Eligibility | Non-GMTA Member

  1. To be eligible, a graduating senior pianist must be a student of a current GMTA piano teacher.
  2. Non-GMTA member teachers must pay an annual fee of $50 to have students participate in auditions.
     

Fee & Payment | Application | Judge Comment Form

  1. There is a $20 non-refundable entry fee per student if this is the student’s only scholarship audition.
    However, the entry fee is $5 if the senior pianist is performing in the Morton Scholarship audition AND using one piece from that audition for the Steinway Scholarship audition.
  2. The online application fee must be paid | date-stamped, and the online application form date-stamped by February 20, 2024, 11:59 pm, at greenvillemta.org.
  3. The fillable PDF judge comment form and liability waiver should be emailed to Deanna Moore.
  4. Payment of fees, applications, and PDF judge comment forms date-stamped | postmarked after February 20, 2024, 11:59 pm will not be accepted.

  2. The senior pianist must perform one (1) piece from Baroque, Classical, Romantic, or Contemporary performance repertoire (concerti, arrangements, and transcriptions excluded).
  3.  A total audition time of 10 minutes will be strictly enforced.
  4. Original scores with numbered measures must be provided for the judge.
  5. Photocopies of copyrighted pieces and/or editions are prohibited. Any digitally purchased copies must have the purchaser’s name printed on the music or should be accompanied by a receipt.

NOTE:  
One (1) piece played in the Morton Scholarship audition may be used for the Steinway Scholarship audition.
 

Scholarship Disbursements

  1. This Scholarship will (or will not) be awarded at the discretion of the judge. The decision of the judge shall be final.
  2. This scholarship will be paid directly to the teacher or institution of the student’s choice, and will be mailed within one month following the auditions.

  2. Non-GMTA member teachers must pay an annual fee of $50 to have students participate in auditions.

  2. The student must perform one (1) choice piece of contrasting style from standard vocal literature: Classical, art songs, anthems, spirituals, or Broadway show tunes.
  3. A total audition time of 8 minutes will be strictly enforced.
  4. Original scores with numbered measures must be provided for the judge.
  5. Photocopies of copyrighted pieces and/or editions are prohibited. Any digitally purchased copies must have the purchaser’s name printed on the music or should be accompanied by a receipt.
  6. Selections written to be performed with accompaniment must be performed with accompaniment.
  7. Recorded or other non-live accompaniments are prohibited unless the piece was specifically written for CD or computer-generated sounds.
  8. Previous winners may not repeat their repertoire from past GMTA Music Scholarship Auditions.

DIVISION 1 (grades 9-12):

  • $250 provided by GMTA general scholarship funds
  • $150 provided by GMTA general scholarship funds

DIVISION 2 (grades 6-8):

  • $250 provided by GMTA general scholarship funds
  • $150 provided by GMTA general scholarship funds

Eligibility | Non-GMTA Member

  1. To be eligible, an applicant in school grades 6-12 must be a student of a current GMTA instrumental teacher with applicable discipline.
    DIVISION 1: Grades 9-12
    DIVISION 2: Grades 6-8
  2. Non-GMTA member teachers must pay an annual fee of $50 to have students participate in auditions.
